Usa – West Coast 2010 Scenic Highway 1
Maybe this was one of the most wanted and desired among our journeys, we built it by ourselves, planned all the details… and everything was ok!
We left around the middle of July, we had my son Manuel with us this time. We had a rather long stopover in Boston (the plane had a two-hour delay) but we safely got in Los Angeles at 23.30.
We waited for the hotel shuttle that took us to La Quinta Inn, a hotel very close to the airport. It is very clean and nice, but we choose it because it is very close to Avis, where we had to pick up our rented car the day after.
We were rather tired, so we collapsed on the bed and we had a very good night sleep. When we woke up, we were very excited: we were in California, one of the most dreamed destinations! In this happy mood, we went to pick up our car. The first moments were a little hard, because Gianni had to get used to the automatic transmission, but above all what was frightening was Los Angeles hard traffic!
We leave the city, and our first stop was Santa Monica: we loved this city, even if we didn’t stop for long. It is beautiful with its beach and its sea…. but you certainly have seen it on TV in the serial Baywatch! We had a walk, drank something, entered an Apple Store (IPad had just been launched and we were curious to see it!), and as soon as Gianni (he is our official driver) was ready we leave again.
We drove until lunch time, we stopped in a diner and then we reached a paoramic point from where you can see a lot of sea lions. They were so big, they laid in the sun and every now and then one of them reached the sea looking for refreshment.
But the most amazing thing were squirrels: inthe bushes there were hundreds, they were not frightened by humans, nay they came near us to look for food and they took it from our hands.. It was so funny, but we had to go! After two or three more stops to take pictures, we got to Pismo Beach, where we were going to stop for the night. Before reaching our hotel, we went to the beach. We had to pay a little fee but we could enter by car. There were a lot of trucks and crossovers driving on the sand, and lots of people having barbecues. We have a walk, then go to sleep.
The next day we followed the Highway 1, a coastline road famous for the beauty of its views. We were not disappointed by what we saw: there are very steep cliffs, especially in Big Sur area (a place made famous by Jack Kerouak), but be careful because the road is rather dangerous, it seems there are a lot of accidents there.
This wonderful landscape goes on for a while, but then it changes. Our last stop was Monterey, another nice city on a bay full of seals: there were so many, and all of them were crying but in spite of the incredible noise, we enjoyed ourselves looking at them!
