Garmisch-Partenkirchen and Zugspitz (Germania)
Garmisch-Partenkirchen, in Baviera,is our destination. We started from Veneto, where we had visited some relatives, and we took the highway to Cadore. The view is amazing and we took it easy, we were not in a hurry. We went through wonderful Dolomites, we passed the border and got there in the afternoon.
The town is very beautiful, it is one of the most renowned skiing resorts in Baviera; Garmisch-Partenkirchen has hosted the Winter Olimpyc Games twice! The houses have got small wooden balconies, sloping roofs, and thet are decorated with flowers.
We had booked a room at Almenrausch und Edelweiss, we chose it because it is just in the centre. From the photos it didn’t seem anything special, but instead it was really nice. The wooden furniture in our room was lovely; and from our balcony we had a great view over Zugspitz Mount, the tallest in Germany. Moreover, the family that ran the hotel was very friendly and breakfast was very good.
After a shower (well, the bathroom was rather small and not exactly modern) we had a walk in the city centre. There were so many places where to eat, and all of them were crowded with tourists. We chose one and had our meal, then we had a walk before coming back to the hotel. We saw a lot of shops, but all of them were closed. In fact the closing time was 18.30, so if you want to make some shopping you must be there before that time!
The day after we wanted to go up the Zugspitz; Gianni had made some research on the Internet, so we knew we could catch a little train. To come down we could choose between the train or the cable!
After breakfast we went to the Banhof (railway station in German), bought our tickets and we had just the time to jump on the train. It was incredibly crowded; we found a little place near the window so that we could admire the view. It was nice, but we were happy when we got at destination and could jump down!
And here we are; the view from there was amazing, of course it was not hot in spite of the sun, because we were at 2962 metres. A signboard informed us that the peaks we were admiring belonged to 4 different countries: Austria, Italy, Switzerland and Germany.
We took a lift and went up, we simply stayed there enjoying the view and taking photos. Then we found a kiosk and from there we bought something to eat… and of course a beer! We had our lunch on a big terrace; a crow tried to steal my sandwich… it was so pleasant to stay there doing nothing, but we had to go back! Gianni wanted to try the cable, I was not so happy for that, because I suffer from vertigo. In fact, it was a suffering for me, and a relief when we got down!
Just near the railway station, we found a beautiful shining lake, Eisbee Lake; on it there were lots of small boats. We bought some fresh water (it was rather hot by the time) and rented a boat. We left the shore and stayed there, lulled by the waves and kissed by the sun. In the evening we realized that the sun kiss had been devastating because we both were rather burnt!
As it was not so late, we decided to make a little shopping! To be true we did not buy much, only a couple of fridge magnets (we have got so many); but we enjoyed poking around those nice shops.
We had our dinner in one of the restaurants in the centre of Garmisch-Partenkirchen; each meal ended with a slice of Sacher Torte or strudel served with vanilla sauce! Once back to the hotel, we spent the rest of the evening on our balcony; we drank a glass of white wine offered by the hotel and admired the wonderful view of the Zugspitz by night!
